I went on a mission trip as a child, I didn't like the idea that we would help these people so that they would become the same type of Christians we were. I find the whole idea of missionaries very problematic, but this guy has a captive audience. Pelican idea was intuitive but I learned that they were used to symbolize Jesus because apparently a mother Pelican will feed her chick her blood if no other food is available.
